Watson Clinic Urology Department Offers System for BPH

3/9/2021

Board-certified Watson Clinic Urology specialist Mark Swierzewski, MD now offers a UroLift® System that helps treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) symptoms. Dr. Mark Swierzewski is the only urology specialist in Lakeland to have recently been designated a UroLift® Center of Excellence by NeoTract, an organization devoted to addressing unmet needs in the field of urology. This distinction is based on the physician's exceptional patient outcomes.

The FDA-approved UroLift® System is a revolutionary treatment that relieves lower urinary tract symptoms for patients suffering from BPH.

BPH afflicts nearly 40 million men in the United States. This common condition results when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged and begins to obstruct the urinary system. The condition generally affects men over the age of 50, and symptoms may include frequent urination, difficulty urinating, and leaking or dribbling.

“What the UroLift® System does is relieve these symptoms without the use of heating, cutting or removal of the prostate tissue,” says Dr. Mark Swierzewski. “Impressively, the procedure has been shown to treat these lower urinary tract symptoms without causing sexual dysfunction, which has long been a side effect of some concern for men seeking treatment for BPH.”

During a UroLift® procedure, a delivery device is employed to insert implants into the enlarged prostate. A permanent opening is created which clears obstruction to the urethra and inspires immediate symptom relief.

The procedure is 90% effective and is performed on an outpatient basis with sedation and local analgesia. Other treatment protocols may be employed before considering the UroLift® procedure.

Mark Swierzewski, MD earned his medical degree from Tufts University College of Medicine in Boston, MA. He went on to perform a General Surgery internship at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, and a residency in Urology at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington, MA. His fellowship in Adult and Pediatric Genitourinary Reconstruction was completed at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. He is a member of the American Urological Association. Dr. Swierzewski is a Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and is board-certified by the American Board of Urology.

In addition to the UroLift® System, Watson Clinic’s urology department also specializes in general and reconstructive urology services, as well as the treatment of incontinence and impotence.
