Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital Welcomes First Baby

7/9/2026

Just hours after opening its doors for the first time to patients and visitors, Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital welcomed the first baby born in the facility’s labor and delivery department on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.

Liam was born at 11:44 p.m. to mom Anaïs and dad Yassir. The hospital is not revealing the family’s last name for security reasons.

“We are honored to welcome our first child on your very first day,” Yassir said. “Thank you to the incredible team for making such a special moment unforgettable. We’ll always share this unique connection.”

Liam weighed in at 7 pounds, 1 ounce. Mom, dad and baby are all doing well. Anaïs is a veterinarian and Yassir is a project engineer. Both are 29-years-old and live in Winter Haven.

“One of the most joyful moments at a hospital is a baby making its entrance into the world,” said Carlos Carrasco, president of Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital. “We are happy for Liam and his parents and we know this birth will be the first of many newborns taking their first breath at Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital.”

Liam has a bright future ahead of him. Through a partnership with Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital, Polk State College is giving a full “Born to Soar Scholarship” to the first baby born at the facility.

When the time comes to pursue higher education, the scholarship will provide full tuition, fees, and required books for any degree program at Polk State College.

“It is an honor and a joy to provide this gift of a Polk State College education. From day one, Liam has a clear path to college and life-transforming opportunity, and the family can rest assured that our Foundation will provide financial support to ensure success,” Polk State President Anastasios Kamoutsas said. “Congratulations to them and thank you to Orlando Health for its continued partnership. We are extraordinarily proud of the many Polk State Health Sciences and Nursing graduates who serve Orlando Health, and we remain committed to training the most highly skilled workforce as a Preferred Education Program partner.”

Steve Warner, vice president of resource development and executive director of the Polk State College Foundation, said the Foundation’s vision is simple: financial barriers should never determine who has the opportunity to pursue higher education.

“Together, we are celebrating not only the opening of a new hospital, but also a lasting opportunity that will one day help a future Polk State Eagle spread their wings and soar,” Warner said. “From the very beginning, this child will have a community that believes in their future. This scholarship represents hope, opportunity, and a shared belief that education transforms lives. It is a powerful example of what can happen when organizations work together to create pathways to success and strengthen our community.”

Polk State College is a Preferred Education Program partner of Orlando Health, which allows Orlando Health team members to pursue a degree or certificate at Polk State with no out-of-pocket costs.

Orlando Health Watson Clinic Lakeland Highlands Hospital officially opened its doors on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 9 a.m.
