Watson Clinic has long utilized the latest technologies that facilitate a more efficient and effective treatment process. When our world-renowned physicians and surgeons use these technologies, they can achieve results that were unimaginable just years ago. Perhaps no technology more dramatically illustrates this than the da Vinci robotics system.
Several Watson Clinic physicians use da Vinci to perform complex surgical procedures at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. According to some, the system is one of the most exciting technological developments medicine has experienced in some time.
It’s important to note that the da Vinci system does not operate unless it is guided by the hands of the surgeon. In those capable hands, however, the system presents substantially better outcomes than with surgical options of the past. And perhaps best of all, it can be used for a variety of procedures.
The new technology of the da Vinci system has made surgical procedures much less invasive, which means shorter recovery periods and less scarring.
The system also means patients can enjoy a shorter hospital stay, less pain and bleeding, diminished risks of infection, and a quicker return to normal activity.
“My specialty is in the treatment of gynecologic cancers,” says Richard Cardosi, MD. “Our female patients reap enormous benefits from the robotic technology.”
Two years ago, Watson Clinic urologists David Bowers, MD, and James A. Wilson, MD, became the first physicians in Florida to perform two robot-assisted laparoscopic radical cystoprostatectomies (bladder removal surgery). Today, the doctors still use the da Vinci robotics system for this incredibly complex procedure.
Using a 3-D monitor, the urology team can view the progress as they navigate the robotic arms to work on the affected area. These arms allow for greater fluidity and pinpoint precision – all with smaller incisions. In a matter of moments, the procedure is over.
“Everyone wins with da Vinci”, says Dr. Cardosi.
